By many accounts considered the oldest in the country, the fortress has written records about it over a millennium ago. Back in 1011 it was known as Castellum Veldes in Carniola province ruled then by the German emperor. Rising 130 meters above the lake the castle is accessible for hikers and so are all other famous hills surrounding the emerald water – Velika Osojnica is the highest (756), Mala Osojnica stands little shorter, Ojstrica, Straza, and Kuhovica are there too and all of them are reachable within less than an hour.
